Ocean City, Maryland (November 3, 2009) -
Maryland angler Steve Doctor broke a state record by catching a 62 lb. golden tilefish about 60 miles off the coast of Ocean City. The catch broke the former state record of 59.2 lbs. set by Ron Callas in May of 2007.
“At first he took off like a freight train and I was only able to get him up approximately 20’ off the bottom,” Doctor said. “It was a slug fest of give and take until I got him to the surface.”
Doctor set out on a three-day trip with friends on board an Ocean City party boat in search of an offshore fishing adventure. Though they originally set out looking for yellowfin tuna, the fisherman decided to explore the depths of the Baltimore Canyon for some bottom fishing.
On Oct. 22, Steve was bottom fishing with 80 lb. test line and a 1 lb. weight when something picked up his bait and took off at a “frightening” pace, 800’ below the surface.
The vessel made the 7-hour trip back to the docks at Ocean City, where the fish weighed in at 62 lbs, which confirmed the record.
Golden tilefish are one of a group of deep water fish that live along the edges of the continental shelf, often in mud burrows. They feed on deep water crabs, shrimp and lobsters, and represent a rarely tapped fishery due to the extreme depths and difficulty.
