State Fairgrounds to Host 3rd Annual Outdoor Expo
HURON, S.D. – Kayaking, trapshooting, air-rifle instruction, archery, Dutch oven contest, a DockDogs competition and the first-ever South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department Antler Auction will highlight the 3rd annual Outdoor Expo on June 12-13 at the State Fairgrounds.
The Outdoor Expo in Huron is free to the public. It is organized by the State Fair and GFP. The weekend affair is a way to expose people to the outdoors, with hands-on activities and spectator events.
“The Expo really has hit its stride in terms of exciting and interesting activities,” said GFP Communication Manager Chuck Schlueter. “The DockDogs competition, Antler Auction and Dutch Oven Challenge are new this year and are very unique things to see and do.”
DockDogs is a sanctioned long-jump and retrieving competition for dogs.
The Outdoor Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information and a schedule of activities, visit: www.sdoutdoorexpo.com.

Flooding to Affect Fort Sisseston Festival Attendees June 4-6
LAKE CITY, S.D. – Some people attending this weekend’s Fort Sisseton Historical Festival may need to take an alternate route.
A portion of County Road 5, about eight miles south of Fort Sisseton, is flooded.
If driving north from Webster on Highway 12, visitors should detour through Roslyn and then to Eden, proceeding west to reach Fort Sisseton.
The road leading north of the Fort has been filled with gravel to prevent flooding. If traveling from Highway 10, County Road 5 is now open.

PIERRE, S.D. – Educational and recreational programming in South Dakota’s state parks is increasing as the summer season begins.
On June 12, several parks will offer programs allowing visitors to join guided hikes, cook in the outdoors, or just enjoy a day of family fun. Among those activities:

Angostura Recreation Area Offers Summer Nature Camp for Kids
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – Angostura Recreation Area near Hot Springs is hosting a nature day camp for kids ages 7-12 on Wednesday, June 16. June has been proclaimed Great Outdoors Month by Gov. Mike Rounds, and the camp is a great opportunity for kids to explore the surrounding recreation area and focus on the outdoors.
The theme of the June 16 day camp is Kids’ Fishing Derby.
“The kids will learn how to tie a fishing knot, take part in a casting contest and learn boat and water safety,” said Willy Collignon, park manager. “We will also try out some tricks for cleaning the catch, and make fish prints to take home.”
The day camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon MDT.
While the camp is geared for kids ages 7-12, younger children may attend if accompanied by adults. Kids are reminded to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and shoes comfortable for walking. Sandals are not appropriate. No snacks or refreshments will be provided, but kids are welcome to bring their own.
Angostura Recreation Area will also host nature day camps for kids in July and August. On July 14, kids can enjoy Finding Your Way with GPS, and on August 11, they can become Nature Explorers.
Reservations are required for the camps and can be made by calling Angostura Recreation Area at 605-745-6996 or by e-mail at Angostura@state.sd.us. There is no fee for the camps; however a park entrance license is required.
