HURON, S.D. – The South Dakota Grasslands Coalition will host its fourth annual Birding Tour at the Dale and Ruth Paulson ranch near Wessington, June 11-12. The prairie grasslands region of central North America is home to hundreds of bird species, more than 500 dragonfly and butterfly species, and more than 10,000 beetle species. The tour will give a glimpse of the natural wonders of the prairie grasslands. “The Paulson Ranch is a great example of how landowners can manage their lands for agriculture and grassland species,” said South Dakota Game Fish and Parks biologist, Silka Kempema. “This tour gives people a great opportunity to view how grass-management practices go hand-in-hand with a landscape of diverse bird, plant and invertebrate populations.” Tour participants will be able to watch and record bird species, hear presentations from landowners and conservation experts, and learn how management practices are benefitting livestock and South Dakota’s native bird species. The tour begins at 3:30 p.m. CDT on June 11 at the Paulson Ranch. Activities are planned on Friday and Saturday for all ages, and meals are included with the registration fees of $20/person or $35/couple, if accompanying a student. All students through high school age are free. For a schedule of events, registration information and directions to the Paulson Ranch, visit: gfp.sd.gov/wildlife/management/diversity/ or contact Silka Kempema at 605-773-2742 or at silka.kempema@state.sd.us
