HURON, S.D. - The Outdoor Campus will sponsor a geocaching event from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. CDT on June 12 at the third annual South Dakota Outdoor Expo, a statewide event promoting outdoor education for families and children. Since its conception in 2000 and with the world as its backyard, geocaching has captured outdoor enthusiasts equipped with a GPS device and a sense of adventure. Containers, called geocaches, are hidden outdoors and then tracked with hand-held GPS devices. “Geocaching is truly a treasure hunt for all ages,” said Kristen Buschena, naturalist intern at The Outdoor Campus. Held at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron, The Outdoor Campus’ geocaching event is free for the public to attend. GPS devices will be available for checkout onsite with a deposit, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. “People connect over geocaching,” Buschena said. “Skills, whether technical or investigative, are taken from various members of the family or group and then incorporated to achieve the overarching mission of finding the caches.” Questions about the geocaching event can be emailed to TOC@state.sd.us For more information about The Outdoor Campus, please visit www.outdoorcampus.org
