PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota state parks will hold several special events over Father’s Day weekend. The activities are a great way to spend a summer day with your family.
Make plans to attend the following events:
“Basic Birding” Walk in the Park, June 19, 8 a.m. at Lake Poinsett Recreation Area. Walkers, ages 5 and older, will join local birding experts on a hike to learn the best times and places to view birds, as well as what devices to use and how to identify our feathery friends. Info: 605-627-5441
Didgeridoo, June 19, 10 a.m. at Mina Lake Recreation Area near Aberdeen. Come to the picnic shelter and find out what a didgeridoo is, and what it does. The event is a sit-down class to learn about the musical instrument and how to play it. All ages welcome. Participation is limited to 15 people, but more can watch. Info: 605-626-3488
Lewis and Clark Homestead Day, June 19, 1-4 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Recreation Area near Yankton. Enjoy an afternoon full of family activities. Info: 605-668-2985
Tree Walk and Sumac Necklaces Walk in the Park, June 19, 1 p.m. at Newton Hills State Park near Canton. Take a hike and learn about the trees in Newton Hills State Park. Participants will make necklaces from sumac twigs, a common tree in the park. Info: 605-987-2263
Take Your Best Shot Photo Workshop, June 19, 2 p.m. at Palisades State Park near Garretson. Join Park Manager Marty Dewitt, an avid photographer, as he teaches how to take great nature photos. All levels of photographers are encouraged to bring cameras and learn something new. Info: 605-584-3824
3rd Annual Dutch Oven Gathering, June 19, 3 p.m. at North Point Recreation Area near Pickstown. Learn how to prepare your meals in a Dutch oven and you can sample dishes prepared by others. Bring your own oven and show others what you can do. Info: 605-487-7046
Shoreline Night Hike, June 19, 8 p.m. at Angostura Recreation Area near Hot Springs. Angostura Recreation Area provides homes to many different species of plants and animals. This evening stroll down the beach will expose families to the night life at the park. Info: 605-745-6996
Lantern Tour, June 19, 9:30 p.m. at Fort Sisseton Historic State Park near Lake City. Tour historic Fort Sisseton by the light of a lantern. Learn about the people and events that make this historic site famous. Info: 605-448-5474

Treats for Dad, June 20, 10 a.m. at Roy Lake State Park near Lake City. Kids will learn to use pie makers and closet rods to make treats for Dad on Fathers' Day. Kids will also make a craft item for Dad. Info: 605-448-5701
Samuelson’s Open House, June 20, 3 p.m. at Beaver Creek Nature Area near Brandon. The historic cabin at Beaver Creek will be open for visitors. Learn the history of the Samuelson family and their way of life 100 years ago. Info: 605-584-3824
Hi-tech Treasure Hunt with Dad, June 20, 3:30 p.m. at Indian Creek Recreation Area near Mobridge. Take Dad out for this special geocaching Father's Day event. Use GPS units together to discover this fantastic family activity. Instruction will be provided; some GPS units will be available for use. Info: 605-845-7112
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. There is no cost to participate in any of the events; however, park entrance licenses are required.

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. – Rocky Point Recreation Area near Belle Fourche will host a nature day camp for kids ages 7-12 on Wednesday, June 23.
June has been proclaimed Great Outdoors Month by Gov. Mike Rounds, and the camp is a great opportunity for kids to explore the surrounding recreation area and focus on the outdoors.
The theme of the June 23 day camp is Kids’ Fishing Derby.
“The kids will learn how to tie a fishing knot, take part in a casting contest and learn boat and water safety,” said Brad Nelson, park manager. “We will also try out some tricks for cleaning the catch, and make fish prints to take home.”
The day camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon MDT.
While the camp is geared for kids ages 7-12, younger children may attend if accompanied by adults. Parents should be sure their kids wear clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable shoes for walking. Sandals are not appropriate. No snacks or refreshments will be provided, but kids are welcome to bring their own.
Rocky Point Recreation Area will also host nature day camps for kids in July and August. On July 21, kids will be Nature Explorers, and on Aug. 14, try Finding Your Way with GPS.
Reservations are required for the camps and can be made by calling Rocky Point Recreation Area at 605-641-0023 or by e-mail at RockyPoint@state.sd.us
There is no fee for the camps; however a park entrance license is required.
