JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JUNE 11, 2010 -- Have you ever wanted to sleep under the stars, learn to camp, fish, go canoeing or create great meals outdoors? If you answered yes, WOW St. Louis is for you. Enjoy a day filled with outdoor activities at the 2010 WOW St. Louis event to be held in Forest Park on Saturday, July 10. For even more outdoor adventure, overnight camping is available on Friday, July 9.
WOW National Outdoor Recreation and Conservation School is packed with opportunities to learn skills to enhance your outdoor experience. The event, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Bass Pro Shops, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, Missouri Department of Conservation, Wonders of Wildlife, National Park Service, and the St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.
WOW St. Louis will offer classes in a variety of outdoor skills including archery, canoeing, fishing, woodworking, orienteering, rock climbing, kayaking, outdoor cooking and more. WOW St. Louis is designed to teach participants how to enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreation activities while practicing personal safety and outdoor responsibility. Classes are open to anyone age nine or above. The cost to attend is $10 per person or $25 per family of four, making it an affordable day of family fun. Scholarships to cover the cost of the event are also available. Advance registration is required by June 18.
This year features more courses for youth and adults nine and above, and an enhanced day camp experience for younger participants ages four through eight. “It’s All About Outside Youth Camp” is open to kids ages four to eight whose parents are participating in WOW. Led by qualified National Park Service and Missouri Department of Conservation staff and volunteers, the youth camp will offer younger children an exciting day of activities, including fishing, treasure hunting, bicycling, crafts and games.
The camping experience in Forest Park on Friday night will include a campfire, campfire stories, cooking demonstrations, informal learning stations (bat discovery, Leave No Trace and casting range) and stargazing. Tents will be available to those who do not have one on a first-come, first-served basis.
For more information or to request a registration packet, contact Carlotta Lewis or Karla Frye at the St. Louis Area Office at 314-340-5794 or the Department of Natural Resources toll free at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
