Steve “Boomer” Sutton was born in Canton, GA December2, 1952, the son of Hubert (30+ year employee of Lockheed, Marietta, GA) and Susie (the little German lady who worked at the Bargain Store in Canton and was a multi-time Queen of Helen, GA). He grew up in the Buffington and Macedonia Communities and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1970, where he was in a band with Donald Hood, Bob Wheeler, Ray Strickland and Kenny Lawson.
Shortly after graduation in June of 1970, he began his broadcasting career at WBHF-AM in Cartersville, GA with his friend Bob Wheeler, now owner of Wheeler Films. Even though he never worked at WCHK-AM in Canton, GA he spent many an after hour with Jim “Bubba” Vann practicing and talking radio in the WCHK-AM studios. Steve made several attempts, to get work but Byron Dobbs would never hire him. Byron told Steve he was “too good for me to hire you.”
He went to work for radio stations in Rapid City, SD and Denver, CO before he came back to Atlanta, GA to work with his friends, Mark McCain, Willard Arbor and his idol, “Skinny” Bobby Harper at the legendary 96Rock. Listeners knew him as “Randy” Sutton.
Steve furthered his career in the mainstream media with position in Palm Beach, FL and Charlotte, NC before returning to Atlanta, GA to work at the incredibly popular Power99 under the name, “Boomer.”
He worked there until Power 99 changed format and “Boomer” crossed over to Star94.
While working at Star94, “Boomer” was offered the host position for the outdoors program on Georgia Public Broadcasting television “Georgia Outdoors.” There, he brought a more gentleman’s approach to hunting, fishing and the outdoors which earned him two Emmy Awards.
Boomer has a son, Christopher, and a grand-daughter, Kayla, who now live in Memphis, Tennessee. Christopher is a graduate of Sequoyah High School.
Boomer and his wife Stacie have one daughter, Erin, who is home schooled. Stacie is continuing her pursuit of a degree by attending Oglethorpe University. Since 2004, Boomer has been employed by WYAY-FM in Atlanta, formerly Eagle 106.7 now known as The True Oldies Channel.
Boomer's love for the outdoors, while now limited, can be seen daily on his website, www.Burning-Daylight.com with his side-kick, A.J. Cannon, discussing the Great Outdoors. He is a member of both the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association.
Currently, due to Steve’s Renal Failure (advanced and permanent kidney failure), he is on peritoneal dialysis (PD), while he waits for a kidney donor. The cost of a kidney transplant is in excess of $250,000.00 and the on-going post-transplant life-changing costs will continue throughout his life.
